Work Retreat

The work retreat assistant program began in 1992. At that time and for four long years before, Steve and Rosemary not only did all the teaching for the retreats, but also all the managing, cleaning of dorms, combined with building and maintaining the Spartan accommodations. They offered and continue to offer all their time and efforts for free.

Unable to continue the increasing work load, they realized that in order for the retreats to continue they needed more help. So they began the seasonal work retreat program for people who wished to be part of a spiritual community, learn to integrate their practice into a more normal day to day lifestyle as well as volunteer their time to help the retreats continue so that more people would be able to receive the benefit of what they had experienced.

From an average of one person per season taking part in 1992, the assistant program has blossomed with as many as ten helping out during a season. Many assistants have continued to return for longer periods of time due to the support of teachers and other close spiritual friends which has allowed their practice to deepen. Now, two long time assistants, Mike (also the manager) and Helge Sansom, are able to share their experience and knowledge by helping with interviews and leading retreats, as well as guiding new assistants when Steve and Rosemary are not present.

Some quotes from past assistants:

How is the work retreat "an opportunity of a lifetime"?

"It is a chance to 'put the practice to work' amongst people who are likeminded and supportive. Personally without the work retreat I know I would not be the person I am today."
"The work retreat gives us a chance to rigorously practice the Dhamma in a supportive and conducive environment, while helping to offer the most precious gift of the Dhamma (the Buddha's teaching)."

How has it helped people to grow?

"It has given me a much greater understanding of what it is to be a 'good' worker, both in terms of productivity and working with others."

What are the fruits?

"Why do we keep coming back and why are we so happy? Guidance from great teachers, being with friends who share your direction, and joy from helping others experience these wonderful teachings for the first time."
"It was the most beneficial and rewarding thing that we have done so far in our life, and we hope that it is possible to return in the future."
"I made spiritual friends, found a deeper purpose and direction in my life, and strengthened my wish to use each day to grow in the Dhamma."
